Thank you to the Overberg education department to invite the creative works team to the event. We love to collaborate and work together for the support of our communities in the Overberg. Thank you

The Inclusive and Specialised Learner and Educator Support (ISLES) component in the Overberg Education District hosted parent and child wellness days on 18 and 25 May 2019.

The idea originated from a meeting last year with Grade R practitioners in the Kleinmond and Betty’s Bay area, as well as the Learning Support Educator who renders services in the Kleinmond area.

Parents of children who attend independent Grade R classes were also invited since the children are eventually enrolled in the local primary schools.

The wellness days were aimed at training parents and children in a holistic manner, increase awareness of the importance of early identification of barriers to learning, and enhance parental support at home.

Parents received guidance with regards to visual difficulties for learners, psycho-social support, measuring of blood pressure, blood glucose and guidance with regards to contraceptive options for parents. Parents were also equipped with skills on how to stimulate their children’s gross and fine motor skills with various activities at home, story reading skills and the development of emergent literacy.

The children were made aware of their bodies and how no person is allowed to touch them in an inappropriate manner.

Annelien Crous, Acting Head of ISLES in the Overberg Education District, said the aim and objectives were achieved through inter and intra-collaboration with the local municipality, other governmental departments and NGO’s rendering services within the Kleinmond and greater Overstrand area.

“We hope to make it bigger and better going forward.”
