Our creative after school workshops are running three times per week in Stanford at the Community Hall and in Masakhane where we were given permission to use a municipal room thanks to assistance from the Grootbos Foundation.
The workshops cater for children aged from five to thirteen years old and are run by our community facilitators, Bulelwa Desemela, Nombulelo, Rachel van Rooyen and Tuliswa Mandoyi. The community facilitators work in pairs with a maximum of twenty children per group. We prefer to keep the groups small as we’ve observed that the children get the most benefit in a more concentrated environment in which the facilitators can attend to each child.
We also support Fynbos Academia in their after-care program once per week. The training that all the ladies received is taken back into their communities and the learned activities are offered in the afternoon workshops as well as in our ECD programs for schools and crèches.
Our vision for all our programs, but more specifically for the creative workshops, is to offer more and more workshops, increasing the days and the locations where we can offer after school art and craft groups.
We have found that many children are not attended to and there is a lack of supervision after school due to working parents. We feel that to counteract this, we need to stimulate and educate children and we need to develop the creative workshops further taking them into many more communities in the Overberg.
